James River Shorts

The James River Film Society hosts some of the most exciting events in Richmond every year. The James River Film Festival has brought amazing artists to Richmond, including the Stan Brakhage, Brothers Quay, Ray Harryhausen, Martha Colburn, and Gary Lucas of Captain Beefheart (who played steel guitar to Rene Clair’s Entr’acte in 2006...overwhelmingly beautiful). Once they organized an event where The Richmond Indigenous Gourd Orchestra played live along to Nanuk of the North! I have so many wonderful memories thanks to these amazing people (James Parrish!) that work their butts off to organize these events in Richmond, and I am so honored this year to participate in one of their newest programs, James River Shorts. On Friday, November 11, from 6:30-9pm, my film and others from around the globe will screen in this juried competition at the Virginia Museum.

My film "The Leaf Woman and The Centaur" is screening tonight at Animation Block Party!

ABP 2011 opens on Friday, July 29th at Rooftop Films, located at the Automotive High School - 50 Bedford Avenue, North 13th Street, Williamsburg, Brooklyn NY 11222.

The evening will feature live music, followed by an outdoor simulcast screening on both lawns at Automotive High, featuring international cartoons, world premieres and fan friendly shorts. Doors to ABP @ Rooftop Films on July 29th will open at 8pm for live- music and the ABP screenings will start around 9pm. There will be a short ten-minute intermission after Xxcuzxme.

I shot the video up on Saranac Lake in the Adirondacks last fall, while The Go Round and friends were exploring some islands via canoe. Then I added a collage of animated elements, working in the imagery of the song and my own indeterminate visual references, and turned what was a straightforward folk song into the moving, breathing melange the Go Round always wanted it to be.

The Leaf Woman and the Centaur is a stop-motion animated film that looks to reconcile a set of creation myths and re- establish the act of experiencing the story as their central component. In the same way Paradise Lost articulated the felix culpa (beneficial fall of man) within the Biblical beginnings, or Dante's Inferno explored our ethical and spiritual scaffolding, The Leaf Woman and the Centaur will use the same basic tropes present in every creation myth to emphasize the value of an ancient experience that died with the cold logic of words.

This is the first episode.

This is a painting I made for my dad for Christmas featuring all of the pets we've ever had. Clockwise from left: Bowser the black cat, Lulu the crazy mutt, Auggie Doggie the lab/ golden retriever, Ubu the Chesapeake Bay Retriever, Clarence the best tabby cat, and last but not least, little Bit, recently rescued from the mean streets of Bed-Stuy. Bit recently killed a bird, dragged it into my dad's living room and proceeded to take a shit on it. Cat is crazy!

Here is the Levi's commercial I just worked on, directed by Josh Nussbaum and produced by Mssng Peces. I was the lead animator on four segments (corkboard, moving animal painting, grandma knitting, and bowling). Brooke McDaniel was my animation assistant extraordinaire, Stephen Dirkes operated the camera, and Dark Igloo created a lot of the props and assisted in production. The amazing animators that directed the other segments are Taili Wu, Lucas Borras, and Owen Cook.

Richard Duke and Brandon Whightsel are in the band the Go Round. I'll be creating their album art and music video for the hit single "Angela" (check it out soon on Top 40 radio), and for some reason Richard Duke is refusing to print these very flattering portraits in the interior of the album. To be honest, I'm a little offended, but at least there now exists a beautiful drawing of a lady with an exploding head sitting in front of erupting boob volcanoes (a visual interpretation of my hurt feelings, duh).

Rich and I are moving. I was going through some notebooks and found these two drawings and a poem, all of which were created on the road trip/tour we took down to Florida in the Spring. The first drawing is of a sloth escaping, and the second was created after surely listening to NPR for 8 hours straight. The poem was composed when I had to use the restroom, and I think we were driving through Baltimore. It goes like this:
